Tips to prevent frozen pipes when you are away

Are you going to be away at all this winter and concerned about pipes freezing and bursting while you are gone? It is a nightmare to come home to serious water damage, and often times, very preventable.
First, it is essential to take proactive steps to ensure your plumbing stays protected in freezing temperatures. Insulate exposed pipes in areas like basements, attics, and garages. Use foam pipe insulation, or even heat tape, to keep these pipes from freezing. Next, set your thermostat to a minimum of 55°F (13°C), even if you're not home. This helps maintain a temperature that prevents pipes from getting too cold.
If you're leaving for an extended period, consider shutting off the water supply to your home, especially to outdoor faucets, and draining the pipes to remove any excess water that could freeze. Open cabinet doors under sinks, especially those against exterior walls, to allow warmer air to circulate around the pipes. For added protection, you can use drip faucets in areas prone to freezing, which keeps water flowing through the pipes and reduces the risk of freezing.
Finally, it’s a good idea to have someone check on your home periodically. If a freeze is expected, these measures will reduce the chances of costly repairs and water damage when you return.
