Measles Outbreak on the South Shore

A child who tested positive for measles visited several locations on the South Shore in the last week which could have possible exposure to other Massachusetts's residents. This is now the second case to be diagnosed in Massachusetts this year for this highly contagious disease.

If your HVAC system is not properly maintained, dust, pollen and other debris particles can contaminate it. If moisture gets into the system, mold can grow, and mold spores may be released from the system into the air.
However, even the EPA, says air ducts should be cleaned in these cases:
- If there is visible mold growth on the ducts or on other components of the HVAC system
- If the ducts are infested with rodents, insects or other vermin
- If the ducts are clogged with dust and debris
- If particles are obviously being released into the building from the registers

A Puff Back,
Most of us have never heard of a puff back. A puff back occurs when an oil burner backfires, sending soot throughout your home or business. It can happen all at once (like a balloon popping) or more gradually (as if someone was holding the end of a balloon and letting the air seep out slowly). It is usually easy to tell when a puff back has occurred. Soot covers all areas of the home or business and may range from light to very heavy. Sometimes the disbursement of soot is so light and fine it appears to be ordinary dust. This “dust” however reappears hours after being cleaned. There is often a strong odor of oil accompanying a puff back.
If you try to wash the film of soot off of your furniture & walls with ordinary soap & water, it actually smears the soot around without removing it, leaving you (and your walls) rubbed the wrong way. We have to use special chemicals to remove the soot; a washcloth and some warm water is not going to be effective. But as they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of soot not on your walls: having your oil furnace checked and cleaned annually be a service technician will prevent even the grimiest furnaces from spewing into your home. Best done before winter! Gas furnaces burn cleaner and do not pose this type of peril.

Using HEPA filtered air scrubbers will help remove small particles from the air and leave the air we breathe cleaner.
You have probably heard the term HEPA in commercials for vacuums, but what does it mean? The definition of HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air.
What that means is that air that is passed through a HEPA filter will have 99.7% of particles in the air that are .3 microns or larger. To help put that in perspective the diameter of a human hair is between 50 and 75 microns. So as you can see a HEPA filter is capable of removing very small, invisible to the naked eye, particles from the air. Those particles could include but are not limited to dust, pollen, mold spores, soot or ash.
Using a HEPA filtered air scrubber or vacuum can help remove these small particles from the air leaving the air we breathe cleaner and remove odors.
